Oliphant, Mrs. [Margaret] (1828-1897). THE MAKERS OF VENICE: DOGES, CONQUERORS, PAINTERS, AND MEN OF LETTERS. New York: Thomas Y. Crowell and Company, ca. 1900. 12mo. 5 1/4" x 7 3/4". [i-iv]v-xiii,[1]-345. Hand-painted, full parchment binding. Upper board painted with red, blue, green, and yellow Florentine scrolls and rubricated initials. Heavily embossed in gilt. At the top corner of the upper board is a 2 1/2" x 3 3/4" embossed gilt frame. Inside the frame, a picture of mountains and the ocean is hand-painted. Gold, hand-painted scroll on spine. Lower board hand-painted in dark green with a gold dragon. Paint on upper board heavily-faded, embossed gilt dull and missing four places. Four leather ties are not present. Else very good.
