Melville Best Anderson was an author, translator, and teacher at Stanford University whose particular interest was the work of Dante. His most celebrated literary achievement was his translation of the Divina Commedia (Oxford University Press: 1932 and Limited Editions Club: 1932). He maintained a correspondence with his former student, Agnes Smith Manucci Capponi (which is now part of Stanford University Libraries Department of Special Collections and University Archives), and gave her this copy of his favorite work as a Christmas gift. A personalized copy of Dante's masterpiece, from one who knew it intimately.
