Sm. 8vo. All edges gilt. Bright gilt pictorial design stamped on brown cloth. A fine copy in a scarce 1881 dustjacket. Dustjacket has done its job. It is chipped, torn in two at the spine, and creased on the rear panel. A previous owner name dated 1880 is inked across top of the dustjacket. According to John Carter (ABC for Book Collectors), ÒThe earliest recorded dust jacket dates from 1832 (many decades earlier than most people would guess). But its history till the end of the century is almost entirely unexplored , and surviving examples earlier than the mid-eighties are very uncommon indeed. This is natural enough, since dustjackets were Ñ and functionally still are Ñ ephemera in the most extreme sense: wrappings intended to be thrown away before the objects they were designed to accompany were put to use.Ó A superior copy in an uncommon 19th century dustjacket. This edition, with illustrations by Miss L.B. Humphrey contains the lyrics to the famous song, "Home Sweet Home". Perhaps more famous than the song is one of its well-known lyrics, whic has lasted as long as the dustjacket: "Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home."
